Driving and dementia
If the person you care for can drive then it is important they inform the DVLA and their insurance company about their diagnosis with dementia.
A diagnosis of dementia does not mean that they have to stop driving right away. What matter is that they are safe and so is everyone that comes into contact with them on the road.
Suggesting to someone that they should stop driving can be a very sensitive issue. For them, it may feel like driving is the only form of freedom that they have left. It is important to make them understand that this is not true and that you are just concerned about their safety.
Driving with dementia does not have to be unsafe at all. A Sat-Nav can really help some with dementia get to their destination and home again without any trouble. But we do recommend that they do not drive alone. This is to make sure that if they get lost, nothing happens to them.
Driving and dementia is a tough subject to bring up but letting the person know that you are concerned about them should help a lot.
Perhaps a discussion about it may allow them to see it from your point of view and not from the point of view that you are trying to stop them doing something.
