If the person you care for moves into a care home
Carers can experience very mixed emotions when the person they care for goes into a care home. They can feel guilt, lonely, relieved, tired or a mixture of all of these.
It is important to remember that it isn't your fault that they went into a care home. It is very hard to care for someone, especially if that person has dementia. Everyday can feel like a big battle and if that is getting even worse then a care home can be the best place for that person.
In a care home they will be able to have all the care they need, given to them by people who are trained to give it. They will have more than one person helping them and receive the best possible care available to them.
If you still want to be involved in the care that your loved one receives then you can be. You can ask to be involved in the persons care and also be involved in any decisions that have to be made.
As you know the person very well your opinion will be taken on board so that they can care for your loved one in the best possible way. You can let the care home staff know about any dislikes and likes that your loved one has. Make sure that they are as comfortable as possible by bringing their belongings into the care home.
Even though your care role has stopped there is still plenty of things that you can do to make sure that the person you cared for has the best care possible. It also allows you to get back on your feet and start living your life again.
