Respite care

If you need a break from caring then the service you need is called respite care. Basically respite care is designed to offer the person you care for the help and support you normally do while you are on a break.

There is nothing wrong with needing a break from caring, it is one of the toughest jobs in the world and you can become exhausted and stressed very easily. Taking a break and allowing your batteries to recharge can be just the thing.

The way to get  respite care is to first have a carers assessment done. This is done by social services and it is to see what help and support that you need. During the assessment it is important to be open and honest about the help that you need as then you will more likely receive it. Your local council has the duty to help you arrange such services as respite care.

Respite care is means-tested and so, depending on your savings or income you may have to pay for this service. This shouldn't put off though as respite care can be a great help to anyone feeling run down from caring.

The best place to start when it comes to respite care is with your local council's social services department. There may also be a charity or organisation in your area that can offer you similar support or a care company that can help.
