Thinking about care homes
If the person's needs have become too difficult for you to manage then it may be time to start thinking about care homes. This can be a very hard topic to bring up with your loved one but if you can't manage then it is the best place for them.
The subject should be approached with caution and you should discuss it with them rather than tell them what is going to happen.
Do remember that everyone's experience with dementia is different. The person you care for may never need to go in to a care home but it is important to plan for this if they do.
It is also important to find out how they feel about moving into a care home. You should tell them the reason why and that they will have better care available to them in the care home.
A move to a care home can be a difficult decision and you may feel as though you have let the person you care for down. You may feel guilty that you couldn't provide the care they needed but sometimes the care people need is too great for one person to handle on their own.
There are limits to what everyone can do and there may come a time where the support you receive from the local council is just not enough any more.
If you are becoming exhausted or the person with dementia is becoming harder to care for then a care home can be the best option for the both of you.
